Concordia readies environmental stewardship center - Boston Business Journal:

Construction of the 13,00p square-foot, two-story building is set to beginJuly 14. The structur e will be built in Mequon on a blufrf overlooking Lake Michigan and work is expecterd to be completed in time for the startt of the 2010academic year. The total cost of the buildingh is expected to bebetween $3.5 million and $3.75 million and is being funded exclusively throughu charitable gifts already secured for the Concordia officials said the building demonstrates the university’z commitment to environmental education, freshwater conservation and emphasisz on sustainable energy resources.
Plans for the centetr include laboratories, classrooms and a large seminar room that can accommodatde 200 peoplefor presentations. With its lakefront exposure, Concordia officials say the building will be a center for the studyt of the Great Lakes and otherenvironmentapl issues. The building will be designede to be a Leadership in Energ and EnvironmentalDesign (LEED) gold-level building. “When completed, the centerf will offer many educational programs and research in water stewardship and other sustainabilitt education topics for Concordia studentzs as well as visitingf area schools and thegreater community,” said Brucse Bessert, director of the Concordiqa Center for Environmental Stewardship Concordia has added new degreex because of the new center, and now offersx a bachelor’s degree in environmental studies and educatiomn with a minor in environmenta l studies, and a master’s degreer in education with an emphasis on environmenta l education.
